New Mexico State University officials said they are enjoying tremendous growth in research funding, approaching almost $200 million. This is a more than $40-million increase in research dollars since last year. The College of Agricultural, Environmental and Consumer Sciences experienced a 39-percent increase in research funding over fiscal year 2009, which accounts for the largest increase experienced by any other academic unit at NMSU. It currently sits at $48 million in sponsored awards. The Physical Science Laboratory (PSL) receives the highest percentage of NMSU’s total award dollars at 27 percent or $54.3 million, equating to a 16 percent increase over 2009. The College of Arts and Sciences comes next at 14 percent of NMSU’s total award dollars, followed by the College of Engineering at 10 percent. Federal dollars account for more than 80 percent of NMSU’s total research grants, with more than a quarter coming from the Department of Defense. Other federal agencies include the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Education, the Interior Department and the National Science Foundation.
