The blossoming of pecan production in New Mexico and Arizona from 4 percent in the mid 1970s to more than 28 percent a third of a century later has called for expanded research. New Mexico State University, whose first experimental orchard dates back almost 100 years, is poised to greatly expand its already robust pecan research program, according to Richard Heerema, NMSU Extension pecan specialist.
