ObGyn Symposium
May 18th, 2012
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and University Medical Center of El Paso are hosting the 7th Obstetrics & Gynecology Symposium. Topics include “elective delivery before 39 weeks: what’s all the fuss,” “gestational diabetes: the new normal?”, “To mesh or not to mesh,” ABCs of pediatric adolescent gynecology,” “advancement in pelvic ultrasound,” and more. Target audience includes obstetricians, gynecologists, family physicians, pediatricians, neonatologists, RNs, researchers and other interested health practitioners. Space is limited to 100 people.

Border Infectious Disease Conference
May 22nd - 24th, 2012
The United States-México Border Health Commission (BHC) will convene the Third Annual U.S.-México Border Binational Infectious Disease (BBID) Conference. The purpose of the conference is to convene federal, state, and local partners from both sides of the U.S.-México border to address critical infectious disease issues impacting the border region and discuss potential solutions to address those problems. The conference is hosted by the Texas Office of Border Health and the BHC Outreach Office of the Texas Department of State Health Services and in partnership with the BHC. The meeting builds on the outcomes of the 2011 U.S.-México Border Binational Infectious Disease Conference held in El Paso.

Academia and the FBI

Brain injury conference

The Second Annual Johns Hopkins Traumatic Brain Injury National Conference: Repetitive Head Injury is taking place June 2 in Baltimore. The program is intended for health care professionals and researchers working in a variety of disciplines, including athletic training, sports medicine, military medicine, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, pediatrics, etc.

Cultural Competence Seminar

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Hispanic Center of Excellence is hosting a cultural competence seminar. University Medical Center of El Paso is a co-sponsor. The meeting objectives will be to discuss the importance of promoting diversity and cultural competence; identify strategies to overcome challenges that may arise when providing health care services to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population; employ strategies to provide care to veterans, military and their families; list the legal, business and clinical implications associated with providing culturally competent health care services; and more. This event is a continuing medical education event for physicians.

Multicultural Health Care Conference
October 1st - 2nd, 2012
Texas Sen. José R. Rodríguez and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses El Paso Chapter present Mano y Corazón, a two-day binational conference of multicultural health care solutions. Keynote speaker is Donald M. Berwick, MD, former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The most creative practitioners from the U.S.-Mexico border will present their proven practices of collaboration and the use of culturally competent strategies for delivering health care to multicultural communities. CME, CNUs and CEUs will be available. Call for presentations has been issued with a submission deadline of June 15.
